The Department of Library Science (now called Department of Library and Information Science) was established in the year 1972, with the objective of providing education and training in the discipline of Library and Information Science. COURSES The Department of Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Library and Information Science. The Bachelor’s Degree in Library and Information Science awarded by this University and others in this country has been given equivalence to the one year Master’s Degree in Library Science (MS) of the American Universities by the Association of Indian Universities. Apart from these courses the Department also runs short term courses of 2-4 weeks duration to the professional Librarians and Information personnel. Being the professional courses of study, adequate cure is being taken to lay down admission requirements to these courses. Almost 90% of the candidates passing out are being gainfully employed in public libraries, private sector undertakings, and academic institutions, research organizational and governmental agencies.
LOCATION The Department is now located in a separate building adjacent to the Tagore Library and consists of lecture hall-cum-auditorium, seminar room, rooms for faculty, computer laboratory and a well equipped departmental library.
CONFERENCES/SEMINARS, etc. The Department has organized many national, regional and state level conferences, seminars, symposia and workshops, etc., from time to time. The most prestigious programme hosted by the Department are:- National Seminar on “User Education in Academic Libraries” 6-10th November 1986. (The proceedings of the same were edited and published). National Seminar on “Problems of Information Science” 21-24th March 1993. (The proceedings were published subsequently). Twentieth All India Conference of the IASLIC (Indian Association of Special Libraries and Information Centres)” on “Information Technology Products of 1990s and Libraries and Information Centres” from 26th to 29th of December 1995. The major highlights of the Department are as follows:- The UGC in its XI plan has sanctioned grant of Rs. 10 lakhs for the Computer laboratory The Department has instituted Prof. C.G. Viswanathan Gold Medal to be awarded to the topper in the BLISc programme in each year. In current year Surya Singh has received a Gold Medal from the Prof. A. S. Barar, Vice Chancellor, University of Lucknow, Lucknow. Information regarding admission for BLISc and MLISc BLISc and MLISc course comes under the PG admission.
