Syllabus and Time Table
Brief History of Department
:
Teaching and research in social work was started in
Lucknow University in the first phase of the development of
professional social work education in India. J.K, Institute of
Sociology, Ecology and Human Relations was established in 1948 under
the inspiring leadership of the doyen of social sciences in India,
Late Prof. Radha Kamal Mukerjee. As Director of the Institute, Prof.
Mukerjee started the Diploma in Social Service in 1949. This was
superseded by a two year Master's Programme in 1952. In 1954, the
degree of Master of Social technique (MST) was awarded. In 1955, the
nomenclature of MST was changed to Master of Social Work (MSW). In
1956, a composite Department of Sociology and Social Work was
constituted by taking out Sociology from the erstwhile Department of
Economics, and Social Work from the J.K. Institute of Sociology,
Ecology and Human Relations. The composite Department was again
bifurcated in 1972 to create an independent Department of Social
Work.
The Department of Social Work, Lucknow University
offers a full sequence of Social Work courses from Bachelor to
D.Litt. level. It has also the distinction of being the first
Department in the country to start Ph.D. and D.Litt. degree
programmes in Social Work, and had the distinction of having
produced the first Ph.D. and the first D.Litt. In addition to Prof.
Radha Kamal Mukerjee, the Department had the credit of having on its
teaching staff some of the early pioneers of social work education
in India. These teachers of towering height excelled in academic
attainments and made a distinct contribution to the development of
professional social work education in the country. They have left
behind a legendary legacy, which the department is pursuing with
determination and distinction. The Department has produced a large
number of professionals, many of whom are occupying senior positions
in the Government's social welfare sector, in public and private
sector of industry, in social work academics and in other allied
professions

titled "Area Development Apparoach" was put into operation in the
city of Lucknow. In order to give a positive thrust to the
programme, three new programmes were started in the year 1989-90,

University, and thus, forms an integral part of the Department.
Alumni Association
-
The Lucknow
University Social Work Alumni Association was formed under the
Societies Registration Act of 1860 in January 1961 under the
Parsidentship of Prof. Saiyid Zafar Hasan, the then Head of the
Composite Department of Sociology and Social Work. Right from its
inception, the Association has been advocating the cause of social
work education and its alumni. It has submitted a large number of
memoranda to the Central and State Government for the formation of
independent directorates of social welfare service at the
State-level; appointment of professionally qualified and trained
social work graduates and post-graduates on all positions
requiring social work skills; and inclusion of social work as one
of the subjects for central and state-level civil services
examinations.
-
The Association,
from the very first year of its existence, started publishing a
Journal, then named as "Social Work Bulletin" on the quarterly
basis. Later, the nomenclature of the Journal was changed from
Social Work Bulletin to Lucknow University Journal of Social Work.
Realizing the expanding horizons of social work teaching and
practice and bearing in mind the large number of scholarly
atricles from other social science academics across the country,
the name of the Journal was again changed. Now it is "Contemporary
Social Work" which is published bi-yearly.
-
The Association
has been holding the meeting of the Alumni to discuss matters -
considered relevant for the growth of social work profession. The
Association has been actively cooperating and collaborating with
the functions and activities of the Department. The association's
contribution to the organization of seminars, conferences,
workshops, etc., by the Department has been praiseworthy.
-
The Association
proposes to bring out a comprehensive directory of the alumni
(alongwith their complete addresses) is the Golden Jubilee Year.
