Brief History of Department : The department of Statistics is one of the high-ranking department of the country with respect to teaching and research. During the past 40 years, the department has earned for itself an excellent reputation in teaching and research. Besides being well-known world-wide for its contributions, this is the only department in the country which figures in the latest ranking list in the area of 'Econometrics'. Several teachers and students of this department have achieved eminence in India and abroad. Many have secured top positions in university and government administration. There is an adequate provision for teaching and research in almost all branches of the subject and library, computer and laboratory are very well-equipped for the purpose. The department conducted two summer institutes for college teachers in 1968 and 1971. A refresher course for college and university teachers was also conducted in 1995 and 2001. To enhance the teaching and Research facilities, UGC granted COSIST pragramme in 1992. Many eminent scholars delivered series of lectures under this pragramme. The department has well trained teachers on its staff with specialization in statistical inference, Bayesian inference, designs of experiments, survey, sampling, econometrics and bio-statistics. Several teachers have been abroad for higher education and under various international exchange programmes. Some of them have also held teaching assignments in foreign universities. Many of faculty members have been invited in seminars and workshops held in India and abroad. One teacher is also honorary faculty member in CLINICAL EPIDEMIOLOGY UNIT of K.G.M.U.
The faculty
members are pursuing research in many branches of statistics which
include inference, design of experiments, econometrics, survey
sampling and medical statistics. The research work of faculty
members has been published in well-reputed international national
journals. The contributions of at least five faculty members have
found place in the standard text books. The faculty members have
been honored with fellowship of various national and international
societies and academics. At present, department has one fellow of
royal statistical society, U.K., and one member of the Institute of
Mathematical Statistics (U.S.A.). Recently, one of the research
students received John Timbergan Award of the International
Statistical Institute for his research work.
