Upendra Nath Dwivedi is one of the very distinguished teacher and researcher in the area of Biochemistry and Biotechnology. He earned his masters and Ph.D degrees from the historic Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi and started his career as a scientist at Biological Science Department, National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), Pune in 1982. Prof. Dwivedi joined the University of Lucknow, Lucknow as a reader in the Department of Biochemistry in 1985 and rose to the post of professor in 1995 and became Head of the Department of Biochemistry in 2006 and Dean Faculty of Science in 2010. He was appointed the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University in 2008 and Vice-Chancellor in 2009.

Prof. Dwivedi has been an excellent teacher and a great mentor. During his research career spanning over 38 years he worked in some of the internationally acclaimed laboratories of the world including the Michigan Technological University, Houghton, USA and North Dakota State University, Fargo. USA.

His area of specialization is Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Enzymology and Bioinformatics, where he was published over 90 research papers in the journals of high impact factors and has made over 80 presentations worldwide including Golden Research Conference on plant molecular biology, USA. His current research interest focuses on genetic manipulation of plant species to reduce lignin content which would provide a major boost to paper industry besides increasing the fodder value of the plants. He has already made some major breakthrough in research which has been received very well by the scientific communities and the Indian paper industry. In addition, Prof. Dwivedi is actively involved in conducting research in the area of comparative genomics and screening of plant secondary metabolites for their potential therapeutic applications as anti-inflammatory, anti-cancerous, cardioprotective and neuroprotective molecules using various in-silico approaches. His laboratory has been supported by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), New Delhi, CSIR, New Delhi (NMITLI Grant), AICTE, New Delhi and Council of Science and Technology, U.P. His Bioinformatics laboratory is established as Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility (BIF) with the financial support from Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, New Delhi under the Biotechnology Information System Network (BTIS) program, furthermore, the laboratory has also been recognized by Government of Uttar Pradesh, Department of Higher Education as Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics (COEBI). With generous financial supports under the schemes his Bioinformatics laboratory has been upgraded /enriched with regards to both hardwares and softwares. More than 42 students have received their Ph.D. degrees under his guidance and many more involved in active research.

Prof. Dwivedi has also brought honor to the university by being awarded Biotechnology Overseas Associateship (DBT, Govt,. of India) twice and the prestigious Shikshak Shri Samman, Govt. of U.P. (2008); Saraswati Samman, Govt. of U.P. (2011) and Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Award 2014 of Indian science Congress Association.
