India is a nation of shopkeepers. With over 12 million retail outlets, India probably has the highest density of retail outlets in the world, with one for approximately every 90 persons making it the ninth-largest retail market in the world.

The Indian economy in the last three years has been growing annually at nearly 8% and this momentum is expected to be sustained in the coming years. Organized retail, at Rs. 28,000 crore (a little over 3% currently), is expected to grow to about Rs. 1.1 lakh crore by year 2010, taking its share to 10%.

It is obvious that the Indian retail markets promises great opportunities with the expansion of existing as well as new markets, categories and formats. It is rapidly transforming from being a transaction to an experience. This has been manifested through the opening of various malls and large-size department stores across the country.

The importance of managing retailing efficiently and effectively is obvious in the light of this sector's growth potential and the increasing levels of competition.
