Every educational
institutions chalks out a programme for the physical and mental health of
the students, in addition to the formal education. A balance in physical,
mental, and emotional, development is essential for integrated
personality. Thus came into existence the "Canning College Athletics
Association" (CCAA). The CCAA was formed almost from the date of inception
of the Lucknow University in 1921.
In the beginning, the Association was managed by Principal Canning College
and General Secretary. Late Dr. S.K. Mookerji well known in the Sports
World was the first Secretary of the Association.
Three years after the birth of the Lucknow University i.e. in 1924, the
first major change into the routine of CCAA was done. The post of
Secretary was split up, and a post of a President and a Treasurer carne
into being. The Principal was the ex-officio Chairman.
The first President of CCAA was Late FT. Roy who retired in 1931. Some
well-known personalities of the Sports World who guided the activities of
CCAA were Chowdhury Mohd. Sultan, Dr. H. L. Dey, Dr. D. N. Majumdar and
Dr. S. N. Das Gupta (History) Chairman, CCAA.
The Athletic Association had a humble beginning, but due to the efforts of
the above mentioned and some other stalwarts in the sports field its
activities spread and it started its journey to a bright future. In the
beginning and for quite a few years, finance was the major problem, but
these poineer never lost courage, in the true spirit of sportsmen, they
managed and managed well. They also built "PARANJPE SPORTS PAVILION" which
stands on the Campus today.
Raja Sir Maharaj Singh Ex-Vice-Chancel lor of the Lucknow University-a
great Patron and lover of sports and games has donated a number of
Trophies to the various Clubs of the Athletics Association.
A big Gymnasium stands in the name of "Sir Maharaj Singh Gymnasium" in the
campus. This has helped to create awakening among young atheletes. Sports
and Games are essential components, which help in buidling up a healthy
intellectual life.
As the involvement of students increased at the University, the
Association was again reorganised in 1935. The President's Office was
upgraded into Chairman's Office, and each game was placed under the charge
of a Teacher President with the Treasurer and Captains.
Prof. N. K. Sidhanta, Prof. B.S. Das Gupta, and Prof. Kali Prasad guided
its activities as Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary respectively. Dr.
Shanker Dayal Sharma,The President of India has during tenure at Lucknow
University, been the President of Rowing and Swimming Club.
In the year 1955-56, a nucleus of a well-equipped library was formed to
perpetuate the memory of Late Mr. M.R. Nayar (For some time Treasurer of
the Association).
In the Session 1986-87, the name of CCAA was changed to Lucknow University
Athlethic Association. Today LUAA consists of Clubs with a Teacher
President and student Captain. The coordination of various activities of
all these Clubs is managed with the help of Three Lecturers in Physical
Education.
Lucknow University is one of the prestigious and founder member of the
Association of Indian Universities and Inter University Sports Board which
came into existence in 1941.
In the Session (2000-2001) Sir, Maharaj Singh Gymnasium has been fully
renovated and equipped with latest technology conditioning machines for
the development of strength, flexibility and physical endurance of sports
persons. Through conditioning exercises thereby increasing the sports
performance.
The Boundary wall of the Paranjpe Sports Pavilion has been rebuilt in the
Session (2000-2001) in order to save the ground from trespassers. There is
a lush green grass ground, which is fit for playing Football. Hockey,
Cricket etc. Athletic Track of standard size has also been laid on the
grassy ground.
The Lucknow University Athletic Association has conducted successfully
following Sports Programme:
(a) L.U.A.A. conducted Inter-Collegiate Athletic Meet from 29th Nov. to
3rd Dec, 2002.
(b) L.U.A.A. conducted Inter-Collegiate Weight
Lifting/Power Lifting/and Best Physique Competition.
Besides above the University has sent twenty four teams of Boys and Girls
in different for North Zone and All India Inter-University Tournaments.
The following students have given outstanding performances in their
respective games.
Lucknow University Athletic Association is progressing in leaps and bounds
under the able leadership of Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. M.K. Mishra.
