At the University of Lucknow, the National Cadet Corps (NCC) functions as an integral platform for nurturing disciplined, responsible, and socially committed youth. The NCC was established in India under the National Cadet Corps Act of 1948 with the objective of enrolling regular students from schools, colleges, and universities for structured military-oriented training on a voluntary basis. Cadets undergo training in drill, parade, small arms, and related activities alongside their academic pursuits, helping them develop physical fitness, mental resilience, and leadership skills.

The NCC is a Tri-Services Organisation comprising the Army, Navy, and Air Force, and is dedicated to grooming young people as “Leaders of Tomorrow.”

As a voluntary organization, it functions under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. The Defence Secretary is the overall authority responsible for its effective functioning and policy direction.

The core aim of the NCC is to inculcate character, comradeship, discipline, a secular outlook, the spirit of adventure, and ideals of selfless service among young citizens.

It seeks to create a pool of organized, trained, and motivated youth with leadership qualities who can contribute meaningfully to the nation, irrespective of the career paths they choose. At the same time, the NCC provides a supportive and inspiring environment that encourages motivated cadets to consider careers in the armed forces. The aims of the NCC, formally articulated in 1988, have remained relevant and effective in addressing the evolving socio-economic needs of the country.

An NCC cadet at the University of Lucknow carries responsibilities that go beyond those of regular students. While these responsibilities may not be formally written, they are an inherent outcome of NCC training. Cadets are expected to act as role models within their institution and society. Their responsibilities extend to the NCC unit, the university, the community, and the nation. This includes active participation in :-

  • social awareness programs,
  • environmental initiatives,
  • disaster relief efforts,
  • adventure
  • sports activities, and
  • other nation-building engagements.

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) at University of Lucknow was established in the year 1968 with the objective of fostering discipline, leadership, and a spirit of service among students. Since its inception, the NCC unit of the University has played a significant role in personality development and nation-building activities.

At present, the University hosts all four wings of the NCC, reflecting a strong and diverse organizational structure. These include the Army Wing, comprising 63 BN and 64 BN Army, the Naval Wing represented by 03 UP Naval Wing, and the Air Wing under 5 UP Air Squadron NCC.

Through these wings, cadets receive structured training in military discipline, civic responsibility, and national integration.

The total strength of NCC cadets enrolled across all wings of the University is 485, indicating active student participation and the continued relevance of NCC activities within the campus. The NCC at University of Lucknow continues to contribute meaningfully to youth development by preparing students to become responsible citizens and future leaders.

Through its NCC unit, the University of Lucknow provides a disciplined and motivating environment that supports holistic student development. Participation in NCC not only strengthens leadership qualities and civic responsibility but also offers tangible advantages. Cadets who successfully complete NCC training are given preference over non-NCC candidates in selections for the armed forces and various other services, and NCC certification is also considered beneficial for admission to higher education.

NCC at the University of Lucknow plays a significant role in shaping confident, capable, and nation-oriented citizens.

NCC History

The NCC in India was formed with the National Cadet Corps Act of 1948. It was raised on 15 July 1948. The National Cadet Corps can be considered as a successor of the University Officers Training Corps (UOTC) which was established by the British in 1942. During World War II, the UOTC never came up to the expectations set by the British. This led to the idea that some better schemes should be formed, which could train more young men in a better way, even during peace times. A committee headed by Pandit H.N. Kunzru recommended a cadet organization to be established in schools and colleges at a national level. The National Cadet Corps Act was accepted by the Governor General and on 15 July 1948 the National Cadet Corps came into existence.

During the 1965 and 1971 wars with Pakistan, NCC cadets were the second line of defence. They organised camps to assist the ordinance factories, supplying arms and ammunition to the front, and also were used as patrol parties to capture the enemy paratroopers. The NCC cadets also worked hand in hand with the Civil Defence authorities and actively took part in rescue work and traffic control. After the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars the NCC syllabus was revised. Rather than just being the second line of defence, NCC syllabus laid a greater stress on developing qualities of leadership and Officer-like qualities. The military training which the NCC cadets received was reduced and greater importance was given to other areas like social service and youth-management.

NCC Organisation

The National Cadet Corpos is headed by a Director General, an Army Officer of the rank of Lieutanant General, who is responsible for the functioning of the National Cadet Corps in the country through the National Cadet Corps Headquarters situated at Delhi. At the State Level, the country has been divided into 17 Directorates covering all States and Union Territories. Each of the State National Cadet Corps Directorate Headquarters controls two to fourteen Group Headquarters. While Directorates are commanded by Brigadiers or their equivalents, the Groups are commanded by Colonels or equivalents from the Air Force and the Navy, NCC Units are commanded by Major/Lieutenant Colonel or their equivalents.

Core Values

The NCC is a responsive, learning and continuously evolving organization. Its activity is guided by certain Core Values that we endeavour to instill among all ranks of the NCC.

These include the following:

  1. A sense of patriotic commitment to encourage cadets to contribute to national development.
  2. Respect for diversities in religion, language, culture, ethnicity, life style and habitat to instill a sense of National unity and social cohesion.
  3. Abiding commitment to learn and adhere to the norms and values enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
  4. Understanding the value of a just and impartial exercise of authority.
  5. Ability to participate in community development and other social programme.
  6. A healthy life style free of substance abuse and other unhealthy practices.
  7. Sensitivity to the needs of poor and socially disadvantaged fellow citizens.
  8. Inculcating habits of restraint and self-awareness.
  9. Understanding the values of honesty, truthfulness, self-sacrifice, perseverance and hard work.
  10. Respect for knowledge, wisdom and the power of ideas.

NCC Flag

The NCC flag for various units of the NCC was first introduced in 1951. The flag was of same pattern, colour and size as was used by various regiments of the Army. The only difference was that it had the NCC badge and unit designation placed in the centre. Later on it was felt that the flag should be in keeping with the inter-service character of the Corps. In 1954 the existing tricolour flag was introduced. The three colours in the flag depict the three services of the Corps, red for the Army, deep blue for the Navy and light blue for the Air Force. The letters NCC and the NCC crest in gold in the middle of the flag encircled by a wreath of lotus, give the flag a colourful look and a distinct identity.

NCC Song Lyrics
